What the protection does

The tool encrypts your PDF with AES-256 and sets a password that is required to open it. Anyone who opens the file in a PDF viewer is asked for that password before seeing the contents.

After encrypting, the tool checks that the password you typed actually opens the new file, and only then offers the download. That avoids a locked file with a typo in the password.

Choosing and keeping the password

Use a long password that is hard to guess, and store it in a password manager. If you forget it, the document cannot be recovered: we do not have a copy of your file or your password, and the encryption is designed to stop exactly that.

Send the password through a different channel than the file. For example, email the PDF and message the password. The password cannot contain double quotes.

Limits and common problems

If your PDF already asks for a password to open, the tool tells you it is already protected. To change the password, remove the current one first with Unlock PDF and then protect the file again.

The password is set on the copy you download; your original stays unprotected on your device, so keep track of which one you share. Very large files can be slow on phones because the encryption runs on your device.
