Three compression levels, explained

The tool reduces file size by downsampling the images inside your PDF and recompressing them as JPEG. Text and vector graphics are left alone, so they stay sharp at any zoom. The three levels are presets for that image step.

Extreme targets about 72 dpi at low JPEG quality: the smallest file, fine for reading on a screen. Recommended targets about 150 dpi and is the best starting point for most documents. Low compression keeps about 300 dpi at higher quality, which suits documents you may still print.

Making a PDF smaller for email

If a message bounces because of an attachment limit, try Recommended first and check the size shown after compressing. If it is still too large, run the original again with Extreme. Compressing an already compressed result rarely helps, so start again from the original file.

Scanned documents and PDFs full of photos shrink the most, because most of their weight is images. A PDF that is mostly text has very little to give up: expect a small reduction, or none at all.

Common problems

If the size barely changes, the file probably contains little image data or its images are already small. The tool does not touch tiny icons or images that would not get smaller.

If the tool cannot open the file, it may be password-protected. Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, if you are allowed to open the document. Very large files can be slow on phones and older computers, because your own device does all the work.

Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one, but your browser and device memory do. A very large PDF may be slow or fail on a phone; try a computer if that happens.
